This Good Friday, Canon Revd. Wayne Hamilton, Chair of the Birmingham Racial Justice Board, introduced a racial justice themed Stations of the Cross at his parish church. Stations of the Cross invites the congregation to move, pause, and pray, using images, readings, and silence to accompany Jesus’ journey through Gethsemane and toward the cross.

At each station, worshippers were offered a short reflection linking the Passion to the call for compassion, understanding, equality, and justice in the face of racism and dehumanisation. The liturgy was interwoven with carefully chosen songs of lament and hope from contemporary artists, helping the congregation to hold grief honestly while listening for what faithful action might require.

Revd. Wayne said: “The cross asks us to look at suffering without turning away, and to practise compassion that becomes justice.” The material is being refined and will be shared in the coming months as a template for clergy considering a similar approach next year.
